Learning & Wellbeing
The college provides a unique learning environment for Year 11 and 12 students from across metropolitan Melbourne, attracting young people from government, independent and Catholic secondary schools.
Our learning environment is designed to feel more like university and less like school. With no uniform and a culture that values individuality, students are trusted to manage their learning and attend classes independently. The college has a flexible curriculum and timetable that responds to the diverse needs, interests and aspirations of our students.
The college delivers a comprehensive senior curriculum including the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), VCE Vocational Major (VM), Vocational Education and Training (VET), and Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC). Students have access to 38 VCE subjects and a wide range of VET certificate courses, with strong programs in the visual and performing arts, design and technology, humanities, mathematics, science and commerce.
The weekly timetable reflects this flexible and adult learning environment. The school day runs from 9:00am to 3:30pm and combines standard classes with longer learning blocks that allow for deeper exploration of subjects.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday feature five standard learning periods.
Tuesday and Thursday include extended 105-minute classes that support project-based and practical learning.
Wednesday afternoons include workshops, giving students opportunities for targeted support, enrichment and independent learning.
Friday late morning is dedicated to assessment, allowing students to complete tests and coursework in a structured environment.
Students also participate in Learning Mentor sessions, which provide guidance, goal-setting and personalised support.
Many students are drawn to the college’s renowned creative and academic programs. Our students regularly participate in prestigious Victorian programs such as the VCE Season of Excellence, including Top Arts, Top Designs, Top Screen, Top Class and Top Scribes, showcasing outstanding student work and opening doors to future study and career opportunities.
At Swinburne Senior Secondary College, student wellbeing is central to all aspects of school life. We prioritise strong relationships, personalised support, student voice and high expectations to ensure every student feels safe, connected and supported to engage meaningfully in their learning.
As a diverse and inclusive community, we are committed to redressing disadvantage and discrimination. Every young adult—regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality or life circumstance—has the opportunity to succeed here. Our students are encouraged to be authentic, pursue their passions and prepare confidently for their future beyond school.
